Rise Up Mighty Warrior – Violence Awareness & Prevention Event 2016
The goals of Rise Up Mighty Warrior are to raise awareness of the long-term impacts of violence against women and improve prevention, personal safety skills, and knowledge.
Women Warriors will host this event in Lloydminster, Alberta in collaboration with Lakeland College, and the Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre.
This event will provide the opportunity to build relationships and knowledge sharing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members, leaders, academics, health care providers, community service providers, and businesses.
Shelley Wiart, founder of Women Warriors was inspired to host this event to create a safe space for her participants of Women Warriors to discuss their health and safety, promote critical dialogue and knowledge about women’s safety, and engage community members.
This event will begin at Lakeland College on Thursday, October 13th at 6:30 pm with keynote speaker and safety expert, Debra deWaal.
The following day, Friday, October 14th will be the full day conference at the Days Hotel & Suites Lloydminster. It will include a morning keynote speaker, lunch, two afternoon breakout sessions, Photo Voice exhibition by Women Warriors, and round table discussions with speakers and academics.
Mighty Warrior Nomination Contest
Announcing the winner of the Mighty Warrior Nomination Contest, Corporal Alanna Jardine of the Lloydminster Detachment. She won free tickets to Rise Up Mighty Warrior on Thursday and Friday for her efforts to improve the lives of women. Her nominator said,
“The most important characteristic to note about her is how much emphasis she puts on making sure new members understand the cycle of abuse, that they are aware that it isn’t so simple as “just leaving him,” and that regardless of whether it’s their first time they’ve come to the police or their tenth, that these women deserve our support and respect.”
It’s an honour to have Corporal Jardine participate in our first violence awareness and prevention conference.
