Vera is 30 years old, resides in Onion Lake Cree Nation, and is employed as a receptionist at Native Justice. She has four beautiful children; 3 boys and 1 girl. She joined Women Warriors because, “I realize whether we know it or not, we are role models to young women, and to our children. As women we are warriors fighting daily battles. Women need to realize that we are the backbone to our homes and communities. We need to encourage other women to be well inside and outside. Our bodies are our temples and how we treat our bodies is important to our well-being.” She also wanted to “meet other women who are beautiful and encouraging.”
Physical activity in her day: Vera currently exercises 4-5 times per week and has adjusted her schedule from morning to night workouts due to her new job. She enjoys all types of activities, including ones offered at Women Warriors like zumba, yoga and circuit training. She trains with her friend, Jo the owner of Muscles and More Bodybuilding and Supplements and has a membership at the Servus Sports Centre.
Self-love: Vera practices self-love by looking in the mirror and saying, “Vera you are a beautiful, kind, and loving person.” She also treats herself to long baths to relax.
Favorite treat/meal: Pasta, pizza, and frozen yogurt from Menchies.
Health philosophy: Her philosophy is simple because it’s the simple things that make a difference and are sometimes the hardest to follow through.
“Loving and taking care of yourself is not self-indulgent, but a way of survival. We are put on this earth from the Creator to love and take care of each other and help one another. How can we continue to do all those things without taking care of ourselves? We are all important and loved the same by the Creator no matter what.”
Daily struggle: Pushing myself after work no matter how tired I am to workout.
Advice to younger self: “Everything you go through is a part of life. There is nothing in life that you can’t do. Finish school, follow your heart, and don’t chase after a man who won’t fight to keep you. You are where you need to be in life, and always trust your journey.”
